Heres a little history of the Abervalley Hurricanes.

2007 - 2010
Back in 2007 the Club was started by a group of friends who were happy to play once a week for fun with as little as 1 on 1 during some sessions and 5 on 5 during others. Along came a local volunteer basketball coach Edward Perry who seen a spark among the youths and arranged a few friendlies with some well established clubs such as Ely Warriors, Kenfig Hill Cougars and the Baglan Ballers. With some success during this time the coach took it upon himself with the help of the YMCA to enter a team into the South Wales Valleys League. This was a rough season for Abervalley as there was only 1 division and some of the strongest teams in Wales played in that division. Abervalley altho not winning any games gained a massive amount of respect as a team of youngsters who played the game and never gave in even in the toughest defeats.

By the second season Abervalley had become more experienced and played more team basketball. After recruting some new players they had  a little more success with pre season friendlies and throughout this next season. Winning only a hand full of games but it was a big step forward after a win-less season the year before.

Due to commitments to another team it was time to say good bye to volunteer coach Edward Perry, so Team captain and Vice captain David Hale and Owain Sigsworth along with the club secretary Sebastian James took it upon themselves to run the sessions together. David and Sebastian also started an U18s team who had large success during their first friendly matches and so were entered into SWVL u18s league. This was the most successful season  for Abervalley with both teams competing well in their divisions with the seniors finishing 8th of 16 in the SWVL Division 2 East/West league beating local rivals Newbridge Raiders, Cardiff Uni, Crickhowell Bulldogs, Swansea Deuce and Carphilly Suns and with the U18s finishing 5th of 9 in only their 1st season in the U18s SWVL.

Sadly after this season it was the end for Abervalley Hurricanes as cost of playing and lack of interest with players moving away and so forth become a major problem and the funding just wasn't available.

 2012
With the interest and attendance of the YMCA friendly open sessions growing there seems to be a new generation of youth looking to play basketball. So former Hurricanes players David Hale and Owain Sigsworth have been working with the YMCA to start an new U16s Hurricanes team. The future once again looks bright for the Abervalley Hurricanes.

2013

This is to be an exciting year for the AberValley Hurricanes as they look to enter the U18s league. Prior to entering the league many friendlies have been arranged to test the capability of the squad in preparation for the season.

2015

After 2 years of running a successful junior set up, the Hurricanes are currently in the process of starting a new senior team and are looking to enter the SWBA D2 League this coming September. Details are still in the process of being finalized but the future looks promising for Abervalley basketball.
