Guards
Point guard
The point guard is typically known as the team's best ball handler and passer. The point guard is also stereotypically a shorter or smaller player to the rest of the team, in Europe point guard's average between 5"11ft and 6"4ft.
Point guard's are often quick and are able to hit shots either outside the 3 point line or inside the paint largely dependant on their skill level. He is often responsible for directing plays making his position equivalent to that of a midfielder in association football.
Generally point guards increase team efficiency and generally have a high number of assists.
Shooting guard
The shooting guard is usually the team's best shooter and is typically consistently able to hit long range shots. Besides being able to shoot the ball, shooting guards tend to have good ball-handling skills and the ability to drive to net.
A versatile shooting guard will have good passing skills allowing them to assume point guard responsibilities. On defence shooting guards are often tasked with defending the opponents quickest players.
