Forwards

Small forward

The small forward is typically shorter and quicker than the power forwards and centres. European small forwards average between 6"4ft and 6"6ft. The small forward position is considered to be the most versatile of the five basketball positions. The small forward position is similar to that of a power forward but also resembles the role of a shooting guard, thus making the small forward position and the shooting guard interchangeable.

Small forwards have a variety of assets, such as quickness and strength inside. One common thread between all small forwards is an ability to draw fouls by aggressively attempting post-up plays and lay-ups. Small forwards should be able to do a little bit of everything on the court.

Power forward

The power forward plays a role similar to that of the centre, down in the post. On offence they are often the team's most versatile scorer being able to score close to the basket but also being able to take mid-range jumpers.

On defence they are required to have the strength to guard bigger players close to the basket, while having the athleticism to guard quick players away from the basket.
